Alex Greenwood is an English footballer who plays for Manchester City in the FA Women’s Super League and the England national team. She is playing mainly as a left-back but also can play as a center-back. Alex Greenwood has previously played for Olympique Lyonnais in the French Division 1 Feminine as well as English clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Notts County, and Everton. She has played for the England national football team since 2014 and was named the FA Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2012.
Alex Greenwood was born on September 7, 1993, in Liverpool, England. She joined Everton at the age of eight and progressed through the club’s Centre of Excellence.
Alex Greenwood made her debut for Everton in August 2010 at the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification round. She stayed in the team for 4 seasons and had 43 matches and 1 goal.
Alex Greenwood left Everton in 2014, due to the relegation of the team. She moved to Notts County on a two-year contract for an undisclosed transfer fee in an attempt to keep her national team place ahead of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. In Notts County, she played 14 matches and scored 1 goal, before leaving the team and signing with Liverpool. However, in 2015, she helped England’s national team to win the bronze medals at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In January 2016, she joined Liverpool. At the club, she had 44 matches and 6 goals, but at the end of the 2017–18 season, she was released by the club.
In 2018, Alex Greenwood signed with Manchester United. She helped Manchester United win the Championship and gain promotion to the FA WSL in their debut season. In the team, she played 18 matches and scored 4 goals.
On August 4, 2019, Manchester United announced they had agreed on a deal for the transfer of Alex Greenwood to French Division 1 Féminine team Olympique Lyonnais. By the end of her one-year contract, she had played 17 matches and won a quadruple of trophies including the UEFA Women’s Champions League. She also won the Trophée des Championnes, Division 1 Féminine, and Coupe de France.
Alex Greenwood signed a three-year contract with Manchester City in 2020 after the expiration of her contract with Olympique Lyonnais. With the team, she won the Women’s FA Cup 2019–2020 and FA WSL Cup 2021–2022.
