Adriana Leon was born on October 2, 1992, in Mississauga. She and her family relocated to Maple when she was 16 years old in 2010. Adriana Leon’s parents are Pedro Jose Leon (father) and Lucrecia Larrea (mother). 

She started out as a figure skater but switched to ice hockey at 10 years old. She played minor hockey for seven seasons, reaching the Midget AA level. She capped off her last season by winning the Provincial Women’s Hockey League championship and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial gold medal with the Toronto Jr. Aeros.

Leon was a member of Team Ontario, which earned a bronze medal at the Canada Summer Games in 2009. She was the top scorer of the tournament, with seven goals in five games. She scored in every game she played.

College Career

Leon received a sports scholarship to study at the University of Notre Dame and joined the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s soccer team for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In her first year, she played 23 games and netted four goals. 

She left the Irish after two seasons and moved to the University of Florida, where she became part of the Florida Gators team coached by Becky Burleigh in 2012. She played 22 games and scored five goals, four of which were decisive for the Gators’ victories.

Club Career

Boston Breakers

Leon started her professional soccer career in 2013 when she was one of the 16 Canadian players who were allocated to the NWSL teams by their federation. She joined the Boston Breakers for the first season of the league. 

Chicago Red Stars

However, she did not stay long in Boston, as she was traded to the Chicago Red Stars in June 2013 for another Canadian player, Carmelina Moscato. Leon played for Chicago for three seasons, scoring one goal each season and making 35 appearances in total.

Western New York Flash

In 2015, Leon moved to another NWSL team, the Western New York Flash, who acquired her along with Abby Erceg and a draft pick from Chicago. 

FC Zürich
